For a Te Deum

The City of Milan had to compose by order of the Austrians on the occasion of a victory.

Long and eternally may live, O Lord,

The imperial line you love and protect,

The line that keeps the populace subject

And the sacred fire on the sacred board.

Like a cedar, O Lord, like an olive tree

Is the rod with which you rule benign:

May it bloom and branch out free

Free and proud where'er the Sun does shine

Be propitious, we beseech you, O Lord,

Not out of pride, no as your very breath

Can disperse us like the ashes of death,

But as the world, in one with us, may moreover

experience your indulgence's highest favour

And address to your holy name a laud.
